Grandma always said DD was an advanced child. She said DD reached a lot of milestones on her development time line earlier than most children of the same birth age. When I read Heidi’s
What to Expect the First Year (Second Edition)
, I agreed with her.
What to Expect the First Year (Second Edition)
tells us month-by-month what your baby should be able to do, will probably be able to do, may possible be able to do, and may even be able to do.
Based on the Denver Development Screening Tests and on the Clinical Linguistic and Auditory Milestone Scale (CLAMS), in any one month, a full 90 percent of all babies will have mastered the achievements in the first category, “What you baby should be able to do”. About 75 percent will have gained command of those in the second category, “What your baby will probably be able to do”. Roughly half will have accomplished the feats in the third category, “What your baby may possibly be able to do”. And about 25 percent will have pulled off the exploits in the last category, “What your baby may even be able to do”. (from

The following is the checklist DD did during her first month. A lot of her behaviours fall into the last category of “what your baby may even be able to do.”
Two hours after birth: DD kicked off her wrapping blanket with one leg. Since then, each time we wrapped her into a blanket, she would kick it off later. Finally we gave it up.
Day 3: DD lifted her bottom by pushing two legs when the pediatrician put her on stomach. The doctor was quite impressed.
Day 4: DD rolled over on one side and slept on her side for hours when sleeping with Daddy (although this only happened once during the first month)
Week 1: DD could curve her left toes and kept her right toes straight.
Week 2: DD could do some cooing. She kicked her legs against my tummy and sprinted out straight forward.
Week 3: DD could lift head 90 degrees when on stomach. She could also hold head steady when upright. She could smile spontaneously, although grandma believed it was only caused by gas.
Week 4: Occasionally, DD could suddenly pull her neck back and level head with body and kept this position for one second when I held her over my shoulder.
