From the first day I introduced solid food to DD, I decided to make my own baby food instead of using store bought. In this way I can guarantee there is no added saturated fat, sodium, sugars, artificial colors or other chemical additives. And I can guarantee it is made from fresh vegetables, fruits, and meat.

Just as mother follows Food Guide Pyramid to maintain a balanced nutrition and physical well-being, baby’s need a balanced diet that contain proper proportions of vitamins, protein, minerals and calories. DD daily provision contains grains, vegetables, fruits, breast milk and meats.

For grains, the choices are cooked oatmeal and steamed rice. For vegetable, I select those she can easily digest at her age, such as carrots, peas, zucchini, potato, sweet potato, spinach, and asparagus. All of these are steamed and mashed.

There are a variety of fruits she can eat: mashed banana; peeled and grinded apples, oranges, mangos, plums, pears, peaches, cantaloupes, or pineapple; cut-up seedless watermelon, grapes or cherries (pits removed), berries (blueberries, strawberries, mulberries) and etc.

For breast milk, now I give DD 5-8 feedings, 24-40 ounces, per day. When she is 8-10 months, her breast milk consumption will be 4-6 feedings, minimum of 24 ounces, per day. When she is 10-12 months, her daily breast-feeding will be 3-4 feedings of at least 24 ounces.

For meat, currently I prefer chicken breast and lean beef, ground and pureed. Gradually I will add thin cheese strips, small amount of cottage cheese, and yogurt.

There are several foods that baby cannot eat during the first 12 months: egg whites, honey, nuts, popcorn, and hard candy. They are definitely not on my list.
