At month 6, DD was using all her senses to explore and learn about this world. I encouraged her doing so by giving her opportunities to see, listen, smell, and touch in various and different ways. Her body also grew stronger in preparation for crawling. Her baby training this month emphasized on hand cooperation, new experience exploring and crawling.

1. Passing a toy: First, I gave her one toy and handed her a second one after she took the first one. Normally she dropped the first toy and took the second one. Then I took the first toy away. Soon she found out she would lose toys if she dropped them. She learned to transfer the first toy to the other hand and then took the second toy.

2. What is this? I seated her into a highchair near the kitchen. Every time I took a vegetable or fruit out of the refrigerator, I showed to her, let her smell and touch it, and asked her; what is this? Then I told her its name and gave her a brief introduction.

I also walked with her around the house and let her touch different object with different textures. When she banged her hand against the table, I said “wood”. When she tapped the patio door, I said “glass”; when she reached out for the coffee maker, I said “steel”. When she slapped the water in her tub, I said “water”, and when she grabbed the plant leaves, I said “plant”  (although M was not happy since his favorite plants became bald).

3. Peeking through a door peephole: I held DD up to the door peephole and let her see through the peephole. This gave her a new way to see the outside world. She was very excited at the view. Then I explained to her briefly, why she could see the outside from a little hole and why it was like a twisted view. She might not understand the principle, but this practice gave her a different experience to see her surroundings.

4. Bowl movement training: Whenever she had a difficult bowl movement, I would lift her two legs, gently rubbed her tummy and let out humming sound. After several tries, her stool came out faster and smoother after I hummed to her, especially when she didn’t poop for days. I also switched to less constipating food like oatmeal.

5. Crawling preparation: Both of us lay on the bed or floor, face down, side by side. I showed her how to bend the knees, how to lift tummy off ground, and how to raise arms and legs alternatively to move forward.

Then I placed her favorite toy at one end of the bed/floor and encouraged her to work to get it. When she lifted her upper body up, I pushed gently at her feet to signal her to move forward. She twisted, rolled, and finally reached her toy. However, I always encouraged her to move by crawling and keep practicing.
