After the grand opening, the online bilingual bookstore has been receiving a flood of traffic from all over the world. But I noticed there was more surfing than ordering from these potential customers. Why?

A local mother of a two-year-old unveiled the myth.

Although her husband and she are both native English-speakers, they want their son to pick up Chinese as a second language. But since neither of them could speak Chinese, they could not read those Chinese children’s books to their son. Therefore, when they visited the online bookstore, there was no book for them to buy and use.

“A book with a CD which narrates the story will be much helpful.” She said.

She added, “It will be even better if the book has some English as well.”

That is right!! Not every parent who wants their child speak Chinese is a proficient Chinese speaker like me. I should have thought about it from the point of view of customers, not from myself.

I decided to add Chinese/bilingual books with CD/VCD/DVD into the bookstore, so that children and parents can listen to the story narrated in clear Chinese via CDs, or watch the videos, which is often accompanied with animated cartoons, via TV or computer.

Video CD (abbreviated as VCD, and also known as View CD, Compact Disc digital video) is a standard digital format for storing video on a Compact Disc. It is capable of holding up to 74 minutes of full-motion video with quality stereo sound.

VCDs look exactly like a CD or CD-ROM except that it stores video/audio clips using the compressed and standardized MPEG-1 (Motion Picture Expert Group) format. It is a worldwide, standards independent format endorsed by Sony, Philips, Matsushita and JVC.

VCDs are playable in dedicated VCD players, most DVD-Video players, personal computers and laptops/notebooks (both PC & Mac), and game boxes (e.g. Playstations) and multimedia boxes.

For parents who are not familiar with VCDs, please go to Q & A about VCD for more details.
