Today is January 5, 2008, the new year. Six months later, my baby will be born and come to this world. I pray to the God to protect anything bad happening to me, my husband M and the baby. May the baby come to this world as a healthy, strong, smart and lovely one!
This week is my 17th week, aslo the fifth month of pregnancy. Important work is taking place in baby’s brain. This month, his/her nerve cells will increase rapidly, especially in the front of the brain, where thinking takes place. Fatty sheaths, which act like insulators on electrical wires to speed messages as they travel, have begun to form around the nerve of the spinal cord. (from American Baby’s As Your Baby Grows, Volume 16, Number 2, 2007)
Also beginning this month, the baby’s senses continue to awaken. The baby has begun to develop his/her ear from inside out. He/she can not only hear the sounds of my heart beating and blood, but also discern my voices.
According to these changes happening to my baby, I changed my fetal education practice a little bit. During this month, I decide to do the following things for my baby:
1. Continue to create a calm, loving, peaceful internal environment. This can be done by retaining a forgiving and tolerant heart, reading beautifully-written essays and poems, listening to smooth music, spending more time with the family, and etc. Overall, keep myself in a happy and optimistic mood.
2. Give the baby more detailed and vivid descriptions of my daily activities. I not only just tell my baby what I do everyday, but also get him/her involved, asking him/her questions or opinions like a real conversation. At the same time, I aslo encourage baby’s daddy to speak to him/her whenever he gets time. Let him rub or pat my tummy gently when he talks to the baby. Tell the baby who he is, say hello to baby, show how much he loves the baby, and etc.
We both treat the baby as a real family member, show him/her our love, tell him/her how happy and how eager we want to see him/her in months.
3. Begin to read short poems or children stories to baby.
Once or twice a week, I read an ancient Chinese poem to my baby (since I want my baby to learn Chinese as the second language). I choose a very simple Chinese poem and keep repeating the same poem to him/her.
The poem I read to baby descibes a poor peasant working under the scorching sun of the noon, with big drops of sweat falling into the ground. The poem asks who knows that every grain of rice in our bowl is produced with every drop of sweat of peasants.
After reading the poem to my baby, I also explained to him/her its moral meanings, and wished he/she would respect other people’s hard work and learn to be frugal in the future.
Again, the purpose of reading poems or stories to the baby is not to make him/her remember those poems or stories, nor to influence him/her to become a literature lover, but to let the baby get used to our voices, show our care and love, and build a compassionate parent-baby relationship.

I came across this blog when searching for information on fetal education. I am currently 5-month pregnant. My mom keeps telling me I need to practice fetal education but I don’t really know what to do. I find your blog wonderful and helpful! I have bookmarked it and will recommend it to my friends.
PS: as a Chinese myself, it is interesting to know that you read ancient Chinese poem to your baby. Is it Chinese poem translated into English?

Hello, Lake:
Very glad you find my blog useful for you. Personally, I think fetal education really works to improve baby’s health, physically and mentally. Right now my baby is doing very well. She is extremely healthy and quite advanced compared to other babies at her age. Grandma said it all contributed to my fetal education.
Actually I read ancient Chinese poem in Chinese to my baby, since I want her to learn Chinese as a second language.
Hope everything goes well with your pregnancy. Good luck!
Mommy
