I hope I will never have the glucose tolerance test (GTT) again!

This 11-hour fasting test, which involves a high-concentration glucose drink, is used to diagnose gestational diabetes. I was told not to eat anything from the midnight of Sunday until 11:15am Monday morning.

Since I normally get up 3am or 5am to eat something, I told my baby at Sunday night that I would not eat anything for a very long time. I told my baby I was very sorry and hoped she could understand and worked with me to survive this 11-hour fasting.

My baby was so forgiving that she didn’t give me any hassle at night!!

Monday morning when I arrived at the doctor’s office, I began to feel hungry myself. Baby also became restless. I gently patted my tummy and talked to her: “Be a good girl. Be patient with mommy for 3 more hours. It will be over pretty soon.”

She was still uneasy, but at least she didn’t kick or stretch, which often means she is upset.

The real discomfort started after I finished the 100-gram glucose drink. I felt fatigue and nauseous, since I don’t have a taste for sweet liquids. My baby calmed down a little bit, but I felt terrible!

Blood was drawn at intervals for measurement of glucose (blood sugar) at 8:15am, 9:15am, 10:15am and 11:15am. Around 9:30am, approximately 75 minutes after I took the glucose drink, suddently I felt much better! The sense of sleepness and sickness faded, but I still felt very hungry.

My poor baby! The first time in her prenatal life, she was starved for 11 hours. Every half an hour, I patted my tummy and told her how much time left, to be patient and promised her I would eat as soon as the test was over. She was quite understanding. We sat quietly in the lobby during the entire test.

When the last blood drawing was done, I rushed to the cafeteria downstairs and quicky ate something. My baby was dancing in my tummy at the same time. I think she was pleased and relieved too!

P.S. Few hours after I finished this post, I received the phone call from the doctor’s office, telling me all the testing results were normal. Thanks Goodness!
